Back in the days of the 1950’s we had a small TV and was made with tube assembly that and was common in the 1950’s, and over time one would blow out here and there, so my father would open the panel on the back and have a look inside of the set and poke around.
He never used much in the way of tools other than a screwdriver, as he did’t have what you needed to test the set. But he did manage to find his way around and found the tube he thought was the one blown, so after he did he would send my brother or me to this building a few blocks away and it took up a whole city block! We never had a TV repairman at the house my father was the repairman!
No kidding the building was very large! It maintained many different businesses inside, I know there was a dry house there because back then my father worked in it once, as I wrote of in a post a few years ago, there was a small company that was sold and repaired TV’s and radio’s and sold parts for the same.
So we would go there and give the person a note with the tubes my father wanted and most of the time they were in stock, they were low cost at the time my father only gave us one or two dollars or so and I think we only used one dollar most of the time! The picture tube was another matter!
Over the years my father made it his holly to repair his TV’s and would help my uncle who lived next door from us at the time, to take a look and try to fix his TV if he had a problem, and also a few relatives would bring their TV’s for him to look at! we had a number of TV’s in the 1950’s and 1960’s that he repaired and he enjoyed doing it, and in his way it became his hobby!
Today’s flat screened TV’s are more sophisticated but If he were still here, I have a feeling he would figure a way to repair one!…This one’s for you Dad!

They don’t make TVs like that anymore!
