Root Beer Float ~ 1950’s

Back in the 1950’s I would go to Mary’s Deli around the block from my house, and for $.025 cents you could get a great tasting root beer float! I would go to the counter and yell! Mary can you make me a root beer float! Man it was so good and you did your best to drag it out because you didn’t want it to end! Yea I’l never forget it I can still taste it.

Ingredients

  • 2 Generous scoops of old fashioned Ice Cream or French Vanilla
  • 1 glass of [about 12 oz] of chilled root beer [like Dad’s s or another vintage- style brand]
  • Optional; maraschino cherry and a paper straw for that authentic touch.
  • Tools; Tall soda fountain glass or float glass
  • Instructions
  • 1. Chill the glass; Put your glass in the freezer for 10- 15 minutes. This step helps keep the float longer- just like they did at the soda counters.
  • 2. Scoop the Ice Cream; Place 2 Generous scoops of valnilla ice cream into a soft=creamy scoops work best for that classic melt – and fizz effect.
  • 3. Slowly pour the root beer: Tilt the glass slightly and slowly pour the root beer down the side to minimize foam overflow. Fill the glass. but leave a little room at the top so it doesn’t bubble over.. Let it Fizz: Wait a few seconds for the foam to settle. You can add a little more root beer if there’s space.
  • 5. Garish [optional but authentic] Top with a swirl of whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.
  • 6. Serve with flair: Add a retro [a paper straw or a long spoon and enjoy immediately!
  • Tips: Use real cane sugar root beer if available for that true vintage taste!
  • 7. Tools you need: Tall soda glass [or a milk shake glass]
  • 8. Long Spoon measuring cup or bottle opener or can [optionial]
  • This contains about 440 kcal per serving.
