Whenever it was my Birthday mostly a few friends on the block and some of my cousins in the building next to ours would come and spend bout one hour or so. You would get a couple of dollars and that was good at the time for a kid, and once on my 11th birthday in 1958, I got $.5.00 because my older sisters who worked at the Woolworth’s store up the avenue at the time also gave me money.

Who Knew?

My Mother worked at Woolworth’s during the 2nd World War and my older Sisters worked there in the 1950’s and they met the Men they were to marry there not long after, the four of them worked at Woolworths at the same time and that’s a great story in itself!

In the 1950’s Birthday parties were simple, there was always plenty of games for us kids to play, like pin the tail on the pony, dunking for apples, and more, but the thing I do remember most is that no one ever went to the bakery for a cake that I knew of, your mother made one right from the oven and home made icing topped the bill!!

So the very next day my friends Gregory and Buddy took a walk down to the Woolworth’s store about twelve blocks from my house and I brought a large toy gun that was popular at the time and the gun would shoot out sparks!

We thought it was so cool! in those days, it was normal for boys to play with toy guns as our favorite TV shows were westerns, and we would want a Roy Rodgers gun and holster set for Christmas or on our Birthday.

It was a more innocent time and wasn’t considered a bad thing. My Birthdays of the past are some of my favorite memories.
