Back in the 1950’s when I wasn’t going with my mother, up the avenue, my friends and I would walk up there just to look at how great all the stores all looked! They were decorated so nicely with gifts, and displayed with all the snow and tinsel.
The way the city decorated the avenue was the best! They hung the decorations from one side of the street to the other, with a Santa in the middle, and it was like that for 16 blocks! We would walk up and down one side then up the other.
If you watched the movie “The Christmas Story” where in the first scene, the kids are looking at the Christmas display in the holiday window, it was something like that not as elaborate, but close to it!

And it was more fun if we were lucky enough for it to be snowing or snow-covered. Back then there were no Mcdonald’s, Burger kings, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, to stop and pick up a snack, but there was always a Woolworth’s where you could stop at the lunch counter and get a hot chocolate with whip cream on top, and a great donut to go with it, on our way back home we would stop in “Davis toy store” 2 floors filled with delight!
We would spend what seemed like a whole day there although it was just a few hours, and we always walked and never got on a bus once, it’s just the way it was back then walking all over town was normal to us.
I will be taking a break around the 15th of this month, and will return in the new year, So I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas, and a safe and Happy New Year! May your Troubles be light, and your Christmas be white! Bob

That sounds wonderful, Bob. These days it would be nice to recreate something like that, but nothing will ever be like Christmas in the 1950’s! A very Merry Christmas to you and yours, filled with retro delights!
