Ceramics ~ 1959

I was thinking back to the school year of 1959, and it’s when I got to make ceramics for the first time, the Teacher had a lot of knowledge of ceramic making and and woodworking. So the more he showed the class about how it works we began to try it out, and how to make a few of the ceramic styles he had in stock.

And that”s when I really really wanted to learn more about it, so we made a number of items like, four leaf clover candy dish, I once made a figurine of Jesus and Mother Mary! from the shoulders up and it came out so nice I think it’s still in the family, and I once made a ceramic of a duck with a egg holder on it’s back, that I gave my Sister and she still has it set in her kitchen, the funny thing I didn’t know it when I was making it it came out with one eye high and the other low!

A couple of year later my family moved to an apartment downtown and I went to a different school, and a short time after beginning the school year, my teacher who taught ceramics class in my old school also transferred to the new one. He became my homeroom Teacher so it wasn’t long before we were making ceramics again, only this time he taught us how to make the molds as well,.

And that was real cool, I even brought in a small vase and made a mold of it then painted it and he put it in a ceramic kiln, set the temperature and it baked if I remember till the next day, then we took it out to decorate! And at the end of the school year whatever you made you got to take home with you. Yea a nice memory to share with you..Bob

That’s great Bob! As a kid I always liked ceramics, but I was never very good at it. I bet the things you made are really cool. Thanks for sharing!

It’s great when a teacher has a real passion for a subject and inspires others to enjoy it too. Do you still do any ceramics?
