Looking back over the years of all the cars I owned I remember how little the cost was to register a car at that time beginning in 1964, you had the option to have you own insurance, or get it though the state in New Jersey I’m not sure about other states.
Well I stated a while ago about my first car that my brother gave me a 1951 Chevy built like a tank! No power streering, no power brakes, very hard to turn the wheel! but I got used to it in a short time went everywhere with it and down the shore.
Back then you could get insurance for say $25.00 a year for basic liability and could add more if you wanted but my car had wear and tear and high mileage so it was good for a 17 year old first time driver. Over the years I had a 1952 Chevy, 1964 Chevy Impala, 1961 Chevy with the wild tail fins, a 1959 Dodge, and 1958 Oldsmoblie, a beauty!
Even had a used 1964 Lincoln Continental Convertible all power but the problem was, it hardly worked had I to bring it back and then after a few weeks the FBI and The Seriff came to the place I worked and asked me if I still owned the car I said no I returned it because it never worked it seems the car was stolen from out of state! Wow never heard another word about it I brought it from a used car lot, and never made other payment on it.
What was good back then if you had a used car with wear and tare and needed say a auto part, we would just go down the the junkyard and if they had a part you needed you could buy it for a fews bucks depending but you had to take the part you needed of the car yourself! I did that a number of times even got a used front windsheild! I think I paid $8.00 for it!
Most of the guys I knew always had a used car and fixed them up, I had my friend kevin who had this great car he fixed up a real hot rod type! One other friend had a 1956 ford with a standard shift collar and he made it into a stick on the floor and it was a beauty! Yea they don’t make them like they used too!
